Abstract: The object-oriented paradigm has given rise to a new approach to database
systems. Object database management systems combine the strength of the object-oriented
paradigm with the speed gained from the close integration of the storage and execution
model. This introductory db4o tutorial explains what an object database is, how
it differs from relational database technology, and how it can dramatically improve
certain object-oriented application software. The basic db4o functions of storing,
retrieving, updating and deleting objects are covered with examples that demonstrate
the ease of integrating db4o into an application. The new native query interface
available in db4o version 5.0 is used for the query examples. Additional topics
covered include transactions, client server computing, structured objects, inheritance,
and configuration and maintenance of the db4o system. The tutorial will include
exercises so that the students can apply the concepts covered and get feedback on
their level of understanding.
Objectives: The course attendee will be able to:
- write programs to store, retrieve, update and delete objects from a db4o database,
- use the new native query interface to query a db4o database,
- write programs involving transactions, client serving computing, structured objects,
and inheritance,
- perform simple configuration and maintenance tasks on a db4o database,
- understand the differences between relational and object databases,
- understand the different approaches to querying an object database,
- evaluate the suitability of db4o for a given application and development environment.
Intended Audience: Programmers and designers who will be using db4o, also managers
or anyone desiring to evaluate the suitability of db4o for their projects. The tutorial
assumes a basic knowledge of object-oriented programming. The examples are written
in C#. If there is sufficient interest in a Java version of the tutorial, we will
schedule Java versions also.
