--- Open Source Community Applauds db4o's Move into Open Source ---
db4objects is very pleased with the response from the open source community to offering an open source, GPL-licensed version of db4o. The number of db4o downloads has jumped to 10,000 per month, we thank you for your support and contributions.
Nearly 1,000 developers have joined the registered community resource section of our new website within days of its availability, and the number of subscribers to this newsletter has doubled since its last issue.
Many news outlets have picked up the db4o story, including InfoWorld, Linux Business Week and O'Reilly's Onjava.com. A list of major publications can be found here: http://www.db4o.com/about/productinformation/publications/
Plenty of blogs picked up the story, too. John McDowall, chief scientist at Grandcentral writes on his blog:
"I have used this in a couple of little projects and it has been a pleasure to work with. Also I have had the pleasure of meeting the creator of DB40 Carl Rosenberger who is not only very smart but also a real nice guy. The product [...] is well worth a look. Nice to see another powerful tool being added to the open source world."
--- New White Paper: The Database Behind the Brains ---
As if you weren't already a believer in object databases, renowned editor Rick Grehan has put together a fantastic white paper illustrating the benefits of object databases and the ease of use of db4o.
"db4o's essence: it is a lean, powerful, no-nonsense object-oriented database for Java and .NET."
We invite you to download the white paper and find out why db4o is the solution to the hassle of object-to-RDBMS development and maintenance: http://www.db4o.com/about/productinformation/whitepapers/
--- db4o Customer Success Story: Die Mobilanten Mobile Service Automation ---
"With db4o we win in the competition for mobile solutions for utilities. Where competitors using relational databases need a laptop PC to process all assets, orders, materials and customers (>300.000 objects), we can offer a PDA based solution by using the embedded object database db4o. db4o uses only little resources, is fast, lean and simple to deploy, and also very affordable in high volumes."
--Christian Herold, General Manager, die mobilanten GmbH, Koblenz/Germany
Die Mobilanten selected db4o over RDBMS, because:
- db4o has a small footprint for PDA
- db4o requires zero administration
- db4o provides lower total cost of ownership (TCO)
- db4o offers superior performance
--- Community-Driven Resources Enhanced ---
Our new Web site not only features a new easier to navigate, clearer design, it also offers plenty of free resources for and from our growing community of db4o developers:
- CVS access to db4o's development HEAD
- Bugzilla-based bug tracking system
- Adaptive troubleshooting knowledge base
The db4o community page, http://www.db4o.com/community, is also the entry point to a broad range of db4o resources such as the newsgroup, change logs, and a download center.
Latest addition to the community resources is a search through thousands of past newsgroup postings. While the search is still an alpha version, it already does good services: http://www.db4o.com/community/ontheroad/newsgroup.
