--- NOVELL TO DISTRIBUTE db4o WITH MONO ---
db4objects now provides the db4o open source object database to Novell to be bundled with Mono, the open source version of the Microsoft .NET development environment. Mono enables Linux and UNIX developers to build and deploy cross-platform .NET applications. Sponsored by Novell and led by Miguel de Icaza, the Mono project provides a productive development environment, stable APIs and a well-defined technology roadmap, plus the benefits of .NET for Linux and UNIX. db4o was selected as the only vendor-backed open source object database with native support for .NET.
The move came after a strong surge in requests to combine mobile .NET applications with Linux powered servers running the Mono/ASP stack. db4o has a strong track record on mobile devices due to its performance, small footprint, zero administration and high reliability. Customers are looking to replicate complex object-oriented data models from mobile devices and move db4o into their enterprise stack. Often, db4o acts as an object cache or as a tool for rapid prototyping that helps developers design object models without being constrained by the object-relational impedance mismatch.
More information on Mono can be found here: www.mono-project.com.
--- db4o RELEASE 4.3: INTRODUCING PLUGGABLE FILE IO INTERFACE ---
Another month - another release! For February's release 4.3 we have made our File IO interface pluggable. This makes it very easy to write your own IO adapter: Simply extend com.db4o.io.IoAdapter and implement 7 abstract methods.
Here are just a few possible reasons why you might want to use the pluggable File IO interface:
- To write a native library for your platform to achieve maximum performance
- To encrypt and decrypt slots with any fixed-length encryption mechanism of your choice
- To improve the security against hardware failures by implementing a read-after-write check
- To mirror file IO to a redundant secondary or backup system
Also, support for Mono has been considerably improved in the V4.3 db4o for Mono. The Mono distribution is now available as an RPM with a makefile to run all regression tests and special documentation (ndoc, db4o Formula 1 Tutorial for Mono).
DOWNLOAD: Release 4.3 is classified as a production release and hence available as general download from www.db4o.com/community.

--- WHY SHOULD YOU SUBSCRIBE TO THE dDN UPON DESIGN DECISION ---
Our db4o Developer Network membership (dDN) gives you all you need once you have made a design decision in favor of db4o: Responsive support, free updates, free developer licenses and a binding runtime purchase agreement.
We want to point out the importance of a binding runtime purchase price agreement: No price quote is binding on behalf of db4objects until agreed upon in a dDN membership agreement. This binding runtime purchase price will solidify your product planning with fixed budget assumptions. The price agreement remains valid for your named applications as long as you maintain your membership.
The agreement also creates the contractual vehicle to meet your individual licensing needs - be it a special server installation, a free evaluation runtime distribution allowance or a discriminated runtime price structure for multi-tier product versions of yours. Talk to us and find out how much additional value and flexibility we can bring into your product planning by means of a dDN membership!
Don't forget, 24/7 support through our direct dDN member portal with a 24 hrs. response guarantee, free runtime updates and free developer licenses are by itself worth the small subscription fee. For further information and to negotiate your individual agreement please contact sales@db4o.com or log your purchase inquiry here.
