-- ODBMS.ORG PORTAL LAUNCHED --
ODBMS.ORG, the Internet's most up-to-date educational and research portal on object database technology, was launched on September 15. This non-profit initiative was made possible through contributions of a group of high-profile software experts from around the world, and sponsorship support from db4objects. At the helm is Roberto Zicari, Professor of Database and Information Systems at Frankfurt University and representative of the Object Management Group (OMG) in Europe.
The ODBMS.ORG portal features open source software, lecture notes, tutorials, papers and other resources for free download. It is complemented by listings of relevant books and vendors to provide a comprehensive and current overview of all available resources on object database technology.
"The ODBMS.ORG portal is a mission-critical resource for any serious 21st century software professional. It is indispensable, and a key element in promoting state-of-the-art software craftsmanship," said ODBMS.ORG panel member Philippe Kahn, founding CEO of Borland and current CEO of Fullpower Technologies, Inc.
-- NEW WHITEPAPER BY SCOTT AMBLER ON AGILE DEVELOPMENT AND db4o --
In a new db4o whitepaper, available for free download, agile development guru Scott Ambler discusses five agile techniques and contrasts their application with the use of relational (RDBMS) and object database (ODBMS) technology. He finds that the use of RDBMS technology complicates the adoption of these techniques, whereas ODBMS technology makes it easier to be agile, especially when using non-intrusive technology such as db4o.
-- PRODUCTION VERSION 4.6 RELEASED --
db4o Version 4.6 is now available as a production version (4.6.010) for download from the db4o website.
The new version introduces deep indexing to dramatically improve performance, especially in specific cases of queries against indexed fields. In particular, performance is increased by multiple orders of magnitude for queries with constraints on field values that are more than one attribute away from the class extent of the query.
Also, due to the strong positive feedback on our Version 5.0 preview, we've decided to make the compatibility of query resultsets (ObjectSet) to java.util.List and System.Collections.IList available immediately in version 4.6.
-- MICROSOFT's LINQ AND db4o's V5 NATIVE QUERIES --
db4objects participated in Microsoft's recent 2005 PDC conference, where the LINQ project was announced. This project's main goal is to make querying data easier by integrating the query concept directly into the programming language. LINQ will be realized through a set of library and language extensions that should be available in 2007, according to Microsoft affiliates.
LINQ follows db4objects' Native Query initiative, as described in a whitepaper by Cook and Rosenberger and implemented in db4o Version 5. This technology is able to optimize native language constructs into queries without relying on any language syntactical extensions, and will also support LINQ as soon as Microsoft releases a stable API.
Microsoft also announced DLINQ, the relational flavor of LINQ, to replace ADO.NET. While DLINQ is certainly an improvement, it is still bound to ORM limitations and clumsiness. More about LINQ can be found here.
In the meantime, development work on Version 5 is progressing as planned. We expect the first development release in October, while a preview release is already available from db4o Download Center.
-- db4o WEBSITE NOW IN JAPANESE, CHINESE, GERMAN AND SPANISH --
In response to db4o's fast-growing, non-English speaking community, especially in Asia, db4o has now added language-specific resources in Japanese and Chinese. We now provide five different language versions of selected materials, including product information, whitepapers, articles and customer case studies.
Direct links to these resources can be found here:
- Japanese
- Chinese
- German
- Spanish
We also provide language-specific blogs offering news, updates and regional information on db4o, where available.
