-- VERSION 5.0 DEVELOPMENT RELEASE AVAILABLE --
db4o Version 5 has now moved into its first development version dubbed 5.0.007, available for free download from the db4o Download Center.
db4o Version 5 features Native Queries (NQ), now optimized for most use cases and platforms. NQ are a new, additional API utilizing the Java or .NET programming language itself to query the db4o database. NQs are 100% typesafe, 100% refactorable, and truly object-oriented.
V5.0.007 supports Native Queries for Java, .NET 1.1 and CF1, but does not yet support .NET 2/Generics. We also need to point out that advanced indexing on "AND/OR joins" has not yet been implemented, making NQs much slower in certain use cases than they will be for the V5 production release.
The V5 production release is now planned for Nov. 14, 2005. The production release will feature additional performance optimizations and Native Queries for .NET 2/Generics. It will also bring a complete overhaul of our documentation to NQ syntax and feature even more samples and records.
Transparent activation will come with V5.1, which we plan to ship before the end of the year.
We encourage you to start using V5.0 as soon as possible, so we can gather your feedback and catch potential defects before the production release. While the upgrade of existing database files is seamless, we strongly recommend creating backup copies before upgrading since we do not test reverting to previous versions.
-- VERSION 5.0 BRINGS LESS RAM CONSUMPTION --
V5.0.007 also features a new and more efficient freespace management, reducing RAM consumption to less than 2 MB, and helping to avoid lost freespace when the application is unexpectedly terminated. This new freespace management is particularly valuable on cell- and smartphones where reduced database sizes and RAM consumption will now make even more efficient use of the limited resources available.
The new, additional freespace management system uses db4o index logic. The Db4o.configure().freespace().useXXX() allows to choose between the two available systems when opening a database.
The db4o functionality regression test suite now runs without the database ever consuming more than 2 MB of RAM. Also, freespace is conserved in case of abnormal system termination, such as turning off a handheld while an application is running with an open db4o database connection. As a result database sizes don't 'creep' if the application is often abnormally terminated.
The old RAM-based freespace management system is still made available because it does provide the best performance in many cases. Since the new index system is used by default, you will have to configure db4o explicitely to use the old RAM system:
Db4o.configure().freespace().useRamSystem();
-- NEW CUSTOMERS: BOEING SELECTS db4o FOR NEW P8-A AIRCRAFT --
The Boeing Company is one of the world's largest space and defense businesses. It provides systems solutions to its global military, government and commercial customers. Boeing selected db4o for the P-8A Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft, a long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft.
For Boeing, db4o provides the advantages of significantly lower database administration and improved developer productivity. db4o helps Boeing to manage development costs and schedules while also reducing operational costs.
-- NEW, IMPROVED COMMUNITY FORUM --
db4o has revamped its community forums to provide better access, better interaction and better service. Visit http://forums.db4o.com/forums/ to see yourself!
No longer will you have to configure newsreaders to access the db4o newsgroup or be barred by firewalls from accessing the newsgroup while you are at work. Also, the new forums provide a better full text search of every posting and an RSS feed for convenient syndication with your favorite newsreader, blog or into your e-mail. Last not least the system can notify you by mail, if anyone has replied to your posts - making the forums even more efficient.
For our fast growing Asian community, we also started to offer special language forums in Japanese and Chinese.
To read community topics in the new forum does not require to sign in. This includes searches through the many thousand postings in the former newsgroup since its inception in 2001.
To post to http://forums.db4o.com/forums you will need to sign in. Just use the same email address and password that you used to register for the db4o community resources on www.db4o.com/community/. However, you will need to select an additional username, that is displayed with your post (instead of your e-mail and thus protecting your privacy!)
-- EASTERN DATA'S MOBILE SOLUTIONS - SUCCESS STORY --
Eastern Data's mobile enterprise solutions are subject of an extensive case study, that is now available for free download.
Eastern Data Group is one of the UK's leading suppliers of mobile computing systems, with more than 10,000 hand-held terminals in daily use in many businesses. Two of its leading products have been redeveloped using db4o to store objects: LoanMaster, a hand-held software designed for the home credit industry; and Mobilise Van, a route accounting distribution management system. db4o replaces legacy databases, and was selected over RDBMS due to:
- db4o's superior performance
- db4o's value as a platform for innovation
- db4o's ease of implementation with .NET
- lower total cost of ownership with db4o

We appreciate your feedback, you can email us. Please let us know what you are thinking, and how we can help you. And please don't forget to share your db4o success stories with us!
With best regards
The db4objects team.
