July, 10 and 11 - db4o User Conference 2006 - London, United Kingdom
The db4o User Conference (dUC) is the only gathering of the entire core contributor team and db4o users under one roof. Its 2006 edition is the first in this new series of its kind. At the conference, attendees will have the ability to influence the product roadmap of db4o for 2006/07, learn about best practices, and socialize with peers and key db4o individuals from all over the world.

-- APRESS RELEASES THE FIRST BOOK ON db4o --

Apress has released the first book on db4o, "The Definitive Guide to db4o" by Jim Paterson, Stefan Edlich, Henrik and Reidar Hörning (ISBN: 1590596560). The book can now be ordered on Amazon.com.

The Definitive Guide to db4o is the first book to cover db4o in detail. Readers will learn about all relevant topics, including installing and configuring db4o, querying and managing objects, performing transactions, and replicating data. To aid newcomers, early chapters cover object database fundamentals, as well as technical considerations and migration strategies. The book is complete with numerous C# and Java examples, so readers will be able to follow along regardless of their chosen language.

Three sample chapters are available for free download:

Author Jim Paterson is a lecturer in computing at Glasgow Caledonian University in the UK. Stefan Edlich has authored several books on Java technologies, including Ant, Tapestry, Jakarta Commons, and open source J2EE development. Henrik and Reidar Hörning are CTO and CEO of Biting Bit.

db4o Chief Software Architect Carl Rosenberger comments, "I am very excited about the first db4o book. Many of our 15,000 registered users will be thrilled to have this invaluable companion to db4o, making them more productive when using db4o's technology."

db4objects' partner Amazon.com announced that shipments of the book began on June 19. Any purchase made order through this link will contribute a small percentage toward ODBMS.ORG, the db4objects-sponsored, non-profit educational and research portal on object database technology.

  -- db4o WINS JAVAPRO 2006 READERS' CHOICE AWARD --

db4o has received the Java Pro 2006 Readers' Choice Award for "Best Pure Java Packaged Client/Server or Distributed Application."

db4objects stands in line with Oracle, Sun, BEA, Eclipse, IBM, Apache, Macrovision, Business Objects, Spectrum Software, JBoss, and JUnit to receive this desired award.

-- OBJECT DATABASE PODCAST LAUNCHED --

Members of the db4o Community, namely Stefan Edlich and Carlos J. Muentes, have launched the world's first podcast channel on object databases! The authors are ODBMS enthusiasts, who feel that there is a need to spread the word about object databases and that a podcast will reach a wider and more innovative audience than traditional media.

The podcast targets all object-oriented developers who require persistence in their software projects and who are able to think beyond traditional relational technology. The authors plan to provide the latest news regarding object databases including interviews, conference coverage, best practices, case studies, product news and much more.

There are three episodes online already:

  • EPISODE 3 : LINQ and Hibernate Annotations
  • EPISODE 2 : QuickStart and a Sample ODBMS Application
  • EPISODE 1 : Welcome message!

Episodes are easily downloaded to an mp3 player or iPod, so listeners may hear the latest news wherever they are - in the commute, in the gym, or at the work place. An RSS feed for a podcatcher is provided under http://odbmsjournal.org/rss.

This community-based project reaches out to the entire db4o and ODBMS community and calls for contributions of any kind: ideas, articles, full episodes or case-studies - whatever interests you. Please mail your suggestions to edlich@gmail.com.

  -- FIDDLER, HOWES AND O'REILLY BACK db4objects --

db4objects has extended its circle of investors to include 3 more Silicon Valley pundits:

  • Jerry Fiddler, founding CEO of Wind River, the world's largest embedded software company and the first to pioneer off-the-shelf embedded software
  • Tim Howes, CTO of Marc Andreessen's Opsware and inventor of the LDAP protocol. While CTO at Netscape, he was the first commercial customer of Berkeley DB, thus effectively kicking off the open source/dual license model that is common to MySQL, Sleepycat, and db4objects
  • Tim O'Reilly, founder of O'Reilly Media, one of the largest publishing houses on open source and beyond. Among many other achievements, he coined the term "Web 2.0", which became so ubiquitous today

All three invested in a second closing of db4objects' round B financing. The first closing has been lead by Vinod Khosla, founding CEO of SUN Microsystems. db4objects thus continues to be entirely privately funded by noted Silicon Valley luminaries, with total investments in the low seven-figure range. Further details of db4objects' financing were not disclosed.

"db4objects represents an exciting new way to create an enterprise," said Jerry Fiddler, "efficient, sleek, and brilliantly leveraging modern technology and on-line community." Fiddler elaborates: "In the embedded software industry, open source is a central element. Open source has propelled db4objects into a unique position to take advantage of the growth of object-oriented platforms like Java and .NET. The flagship product db4o has become a widely used standard among OO developers. By making them native, open source, and embeddable, db4objects has put object databases back onto the map."

We are excited to receive endorsement for our plans from these individuals and look forward to working with them and to growing db4objects to the next level.
