"I have a couple of Struts 2 sites running over db4o object database, and I have never had such a smooth job of developing code. I only had to think about one thing -- objects! No mapping files, XML, table names, join strategies..."

-- db4o 7.1 MAKES PERSISTENCE TRANSPARENT --

db4o 7.1 has reached the goal of making persistence totally transparent. Transparent Persistence is the result of combining Transparent Activation, introduced with db4o 7.0 and Transparent Update, introduced in this most current release.

Transparent Update persists objects without any explicit command. The code looks no different than non-persistent code except for the benefit of transaction semantics.

Read more about Transparent persistence in Rodrigo's Blog post and in the press release. Registered users of db4o can download the software from the db4o developer site.

-- XtremeConnect ENJOYS GREAT DEMAND --

Since the introduction of XtremeConnect in November customers have benefitted from over 140 hours of one-on-one time with db4o specialists.

XtremeConnect is a component of the dDN Enterprise offering introduced in November 2007. It allows developers to directly connect with a db4o specialist for a remote pairing session that enables joint design reviews, problem solving or debugging with unprecedented efficiency.

Customer feedback on these new services has been overwhelmingly positive.

Please visit the db4o web site to learn more about dDN Enterprise and XtremeConnect.

-- ObjectManager ENTERPRISE FOR ECLIPSE RELEASED --

The Eclipse version of ObjectManager Enterprise for Java developers is now available to dDN Enterprise subscribers.

ObjectManager Enterprise is a completely new design of the ObjectManager productivity tool for database browsing and maintenance. ObjectManager Enterprise was introduced in November 2007 as a Visual Studio plugin for .NET developers. Now Java developers can enjoy the same productivity benefits.

ObjectManger Enterprise is designed as a plug-in to the Eclipse IDE, leveraging the capabilities and features of Eclipse and allowing Java developers to remain in their favorite development environment.

You can find more information on ObjectManager Enterprise on the web.

-- EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT FOR dUC 2008 / ICOODB --

Sign up now and enjoy a significant discount on the registration fee for the 2008 db4o User Conference (dUC) on March 12, 2008. Anyone interested in attending both the dUC and the ICOODB can purchase a conference bundle that includes the registration for the first international conference on object databases, ICOODB held on March 13 and 14 in the same venue.

This is a great opportunity to learn about object database technology, exchange ideas and meet interesting people. Mark your calendars for the event.

You can find more about the dUC on the events page. Please also visit the ICOODB page.

-- 2007 IN REVIEW --

We would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a happy new year and thank you for all the contributions and support you have provided in 2007.

Here is a sample of what you have helped achieve:

  • The developer community has grown to 30,000 users
  • Downloads of db4o doubled last year to a cumulative total of nearly 2M
  • We are proud to count 110 members of our community as dVPs (db4o Most Valued Professionals), double the number from last year
  • There are close to 100 projects

None of this could have been done without you – Thank you!

-- db4objects INTRODUCES CodeCommander PROGRAM --

The CodeCommander program is designed to identify projects that are of particular importance to both the community and the direction of db4o and to assure the timely and successful completion of these projects.

Specifically the program defines a range of incentives such as collaboration with core team members (including pairing sessions), monetary rewards, access to development infrastructure for project support and marketing of successful projects to a large user community for fast adoption.

To learn more about the program please visit the CodeCommander page.

-- STRAIGHT FORWARD PERSISTENCE FOR WICKET --

"A Little Persistence Framework for Wicket" by Tim Boudreau is available in the code snippets section. It demonstrates how to leverage db4o in Wicket web applications.
Apache Wicket is a web application framework that features a proper mark-up/logic separation, a POJO data model, and a refreshing lack of XML focused on providing reusable components written with plain Java and HTML (certainly a perfect fit for db4o!).

-- JPOX "db4o" PLUGIN VERSION 1.2.0-BETA-5 RELEASED --

This plugin provides persistence to db4o datastores using either the JDO1.0/2.0/2.1 API or the JPA1.0 API. Changes in this release include:

  • Querying using JDOQL - initial release, supporting the majority of available JDOQL features
  • Bug fixes for transaction handling, and application identity
  • Addition of support for auto-start mechanisms, notifying JPOX of "known" classes for efficiency
  • Minimized the memory overhead of collection/map wrappers Support for relative file paths in file-based DB4O persistence

In addition to this plugin release, JPOX "Core" module provides support for many new features for JDO2.1. Read more in the db4o JPOX Project page and the JPOX web site.

-- HOW TO USE db4o WITH MOZILLA RHINO SCRIPT ENGINE --

Jim Morris has contributed an example of how to use db4o with Mozilla Rhino Script Engine. Mozilla Rhino is an open-source implementation of JavaScript written entirely in Java. It is typically embedded into Java applications to provide scripting to end users. Read more on in the Useful Snippet section of the db4o developer site.
