It has been a really exciting year for db4o! One year ago, Versant
acquired db4o, bringing a new level of energy and enthusiasm to the core
development team. Armed with passion, the db4o team delivered a rock solid
stable version (v7.4) and put 5 development versions out (7.8, 7.9, 7.10,
7.11 and 7.12) with vibrant new features making db4o safer, smaller and
faster!
Versant and team db4o increased it's commitment with the db4o community by
open sourcing the Object Manager Enterprise (OME), rewarding our db4o
Valued Professionals (dVP) for 2009, joining ICOODB 2009, moving db4o to GPLv3 and providing a
Maven snapshot repository for db4o artifacts. We also made sure to provide
cool resources to get you up and running with db4o such as the Java/.NET
Getting Started videos and the db4o DZone refcard.
On the technical side, this year we introduced many outstanding features
such as new caching options, Transparent Persistence for Java Collections,
ADO.NET DataServices compatibility API, etc. Further, we made many
improvements in areas such as: LINQ, Exception Handling, Object Prefetching
on Networked C/S, steady progress on a Silverlight port of db4o and Runtime
Statistics (among others).
But, it's not really about what we did during this year, it's also about
you! db4o was also featured in Alt.NET and PowerShell podcasts, included in
cool Android applications, used as main character in an educational comic
blog series and included in really cool projects such as Google's Freenet,
Sitebricks and the Jease Content Management System.
So we really want to say THANK YOU to the db4o community. Be ready for an
exciting 2010 which will start with a new, optimized developer website!

"Let’s get this out of the way. Object databases aren’t just for ninjas although they are often wielded by ninjas. An object database is exactly what it sounds like, a database for your objects. No sql, no tables, no object-relational impedance. Just objects persisted similar to how a relational database allows you to store and persist tabular information offline without all the grief of mapping your object-oriented structure onto a relational model. Instead you create your objects and using the database’s API you can save and query for your data without worrying about sql or any of that mess. My personal favorite OODBMS (object-oriented database management system) is db4o. I recommend downloading and playing around with it to get a feel for how simple it is to use."
