db4objects CEO Christof Wittig to speak at LinuxWorld Boston 2005
“The Business of Open Source Databases” Panel to discuss the emergence of open source databases and their impact on proprietary software.

SAN MATEO, Calif., January 25, 2005 – db4objects, providers of the leading open source object database for Java and .NET, today announced that CEO Christof Wittig and Lead Engineer David Orme will be speaking at LinuxWorld Boston 2005:

Panel “The Business of Open Source Databases”: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 1:15PM-2:30PM

db4objects CEO Christof Wittig will join Marten Mickos, CEO, MySQL, Jon Prial, Vice President, IBM, Tony Gaughan, SVP of Development, Computer Associates, Inc. and Mike Olson, CEO, Sleepycat Software Inc. on a panel entitled “The Business of Open Source Databases.” Moderated by Fortune Magazine Technology Writer Fred Vogelstein, the panel will cover licensing issues, business models and customer experiences. The panel will shed light on why databases have proven to be among the most successful open source business models.

“The market for open source databases has been proven, and db4objects intends to continue the path forward by providing a dual-license for db4o. It is our belief that providing an open source version of our products allows us to build a lower cost, in bound sales model leveraging the community approach to marketing and development.” Said CEO Christof Wittig. “With the popularity of Java and .NET we feel that the time is right for an object database to complement the maturity of object-oriented programming languages.”

Additionally, Christof Wittig and David Orme will host “Object Databases for Java and Mono” as a “Birds of a Feather” session on Tuesday, February 15, 2005, 5:30PM-7:30PM. This informal session is a chance for developers to discuss the issues surrounding databases and object-oriented programming. Object databases offer developers the advantages of small footprints, minimal administration and no translation from object oriented programming languages to RDBMS.
