db4o Object Database to be Bundled with Mono Platform
Open Source technology bundle provides enterprise option for true object-oriented
.NET development
SAN MATEO, Calif., February 15, 2005 – db4objects, providers of the leading open
source object database for Java and .NET, today announced that Novell-sponsored
Mono will now include db4objects' object database as part of its distribution. db4o
is the native .NET open source object database that runs on Mono, an open source
version of the Microsoft .NET development environment.
With db4o, Mono now offers true object oriented persistence for Linux and UNIX developers.
Led by Miguel de Icaza, the Mono project provides a cross-platform development environment,
stable APIs and a well-defined technology roadmap, plus the benefits of .NET for
Linux and UNIX.
“.NET developers greatly benefit from the cross-platform flexibility freely available
to them through the Mono project,” said Erik Dasque, Mono product manager for Novell.
“Mono's bundling of db4o encourages enterprises to combine the benefits of a.NET-based
development platform and the strong momentum of the open source industry.”
db4o’s object oriented database technology offers both .NET and Java developers
an easy way to store complex object structures. Using the open source db4o, developers
can quickly and economically provide object persistence with high performance, reliability
and zero administration. When paired with Mono, enterprises can integrate mobile
applications running on Windows CE and db4o on the Mono/ASP/Linux stack. The technology
can easily be embedded, making it ideal for mobile, gaming, medical device and real-time
control systems.
“db4o is a natural fit for the object-oriented .NET framework of Mono, allowing
developers to quickly and efficiently develop applications using less code. Relational
databases simply do not match the object world,” said Christof Wittig, CEO of db4objects.
“With Mono’s endorsement, enterprises now have a viable option for object databases,
resulting in faster time to market and reduced development costs.”
db4o currently powers mission-critical applications at organizations such as BMW,
Hertz, Indra Sistemas and Bosch. All db4o database software is available under a
dual licensing model. Developers and organizations can choose between an open source
(GPL) or a commercial db4o license for embedded use.
db4o helps developers prototype object models without being constrained by the object-relational
impedance mismatch. Consequently, users can choose to embed db4o into final products
or to implement an object-relational mapper, such as NHibernate, to connect to legacy
relational databases.
db4o and an interactive tutorial are freely available for download on
www.db4o.com. Additional developer resources also are available at
www.db4o.com/community. For more information on the Mono project and
