db4objects Powers Spain's High-Speed Rail via Indra Sistemas
Indra pioneers db4o-based real-time transportation control system

SAN MATEO, Calif., March 9, 2005 - db4objects, providers of the leading open source object database for Java and .NET, today announced that db4o will be rolled out across the control systems that power Spain’s new AVE high-speed bullet train system. Indra Sistemas, Spain’s leading IT and Defense Systems company, pioneered the use of db4o as a mission-critical, fail-proof, real-time object database, now providing the brains behind its integrated high-speed train control system (IRC).

Built entirely in Java, IRC is at the forefront of transportation management systems. Indra relied on the small footprint, speed, and simplicity of db4o in the design of the control systems’ complex and demanding architecture.

"We chose db4o as the core of the real-time database because it allows us to administer and control multiple management layers connecting to a relational database in the corporate network,” said José Miguel Rubio Sánchez, IRC Technical Manager at Indra Sistemas. “Now we can focus our efforts on the design and development of this complex information smart model without having to worry about the technological challenges of storing objects.”

Indra was able to see immediate benefits by integrating db4o into its complex Real Time System Control Framework, using db4o to store the large number of objects necessary to represent the railways’ real-time state. With over 30,000 objects in memory and 30 classes, along with 80 TB of information flowing into the corporate network, db4o’s speed allows the system to process over 200,000 objects per second. Indra also benefits from the ability to query with objects, enabling a highly complex Java OOD without requiring data transformation.

db4o provides a single data model system-wide, allowing centralized monitoring, tracking and problem resolution. This element becomes increasingly important as Spain rolls out additional routes on the AVE system. Initially running between Madrid and Seville, AVE trains now service Zaragoza and Llieda as well. Multiple new routes are planned over the next three years.

"We are extremely pleased to have Indra as a partner, focusing on transportation and control systems,” Said Christof Wittig, CEO of db4objects. “The use of db4o in Spain’s AVE rail system further illustrates db4o’s value as a multi-faceted tool for object-oriented development and deployment.”

db4o is optimized to run in a minimal footprint and requires zero administration, critical in designing real-time systems. Native to both Java and .NET programming frameworks, db4o allows developers to store objects directly. Developers and organizations can choose between an open source (GPL) or a commercial db4o license for embedded use. db4o and an interactive tutorial are available for free download at www.db4o.com.
